The Ometepe ferry from San Jorge

Ometepe is reached by water from San Jorge, the port next to Rivas. Ferries and smaller boats (lanchas) cross to Moyogalpa through the day; the crossing takes about an hour.

Times

Reported in 2026: boats leave San Jorge for Moyogalpa from about 7:00 until 17:45, and Moyogalpa for San Jorge from about 5:30 until 17:30. A few ferries go to San José del Sur on the other side of the island instead. Times change with the season and the lake level, so confirm at the port.

Fares

The ferry is about C$50 a person each way and the smaller lanchas a little less; non-residents also pay a US$1 fee to enter the port.

Getting to San Jorge

San Jorge is about 6 km from Rivas: buses pass about hourly on the street north of the Rivas terminal, and taxis wait at the terminal. From Managua, express buses to San Jorge leave from Huembes.

The Granada ferry

A slower ferry from Granada to Altagracia on Ometepe and on to San Carlos used to run once a week. A 2023 report says it was suspended indefinitely, so do not plan around it without checking.
