Arriving late is the norm here. It is a long drive from Managua airport, many flights land in the afternoon or evening, and plenty of people reach San Juan del Sur after dark. Before you land

  • Book the transfer ahead at a fixed price, so nobody is negotiating in the arrivals hall at night.
  • Send the driver the exact address or a map pin, and share your flight number so a delay is covered.
  • Ask your host how check-in works after dark — a key box, a night guard or a reception that stays open — and get the answer in writing.
  • Carry some córdobas or small US dollar notes. Cash is normal for drivers and small shops.

Getting in

  • Gated communities usually need a name at the gate. Tell your host, or the guard, who is arriving and roughly when.
  • If the driver cannot reach a door up a steep or unlit road, agree a meeting point in advance rather than at midnight.
  • Blink drivers carry bags to reception or the door, not to the gate.

Food and water on the first night

  • You can order before you travel and name a delivery time, so it is waiting when you get in.
  • Outside the town centre, choose the outer-beach option at checkout; that run has a minimum order.
