Can you drink the tap water in San Juan del Sur?

How drinking water actually works here

  • Households buy purified water in large refillable bottles — the kind that sit on a dispenser or get tipped into a jug.
  • You pay a deposit on the bottle itself once, then pay only for the refill after that. Handing back an empty is part of the routine, not an extra errand.
  • Hotels and rental houses usually have a dispenser already. If yours does, you only ever need refills.
  • For a short trip, small bottled water from any shop is simpler than setting up a dispenser for four days.

Why people have it delivered

  • A full bottle is heavy and awkward, and much of San Juan del Sur is uphill from the shops.
  • Running out is the actual problem. It always happens in the evening, on a hot day, when nobody wants to walk down and back.
