Estelí is up in the northern highlands, known for tobacco and as the way in to Miraflor. San Juan del Sur is on the southern Pacific coast. This is close to the full length of the country and it is a serious day of travel.

Be honest with yourself about the distance

  • You are crossing most of Nicaragua, passing Managua in the middle, and it takes the better part of a day however you travel.
  • By public transport it is a chain rather than a journey: Estelí to Managua, across Managua between terminals, Managua to Rivas, Rivas to San Juan del Sur.
  • The Managua terminal change is the part that catches people out. It is a city crossing in the middle of a long day with all your luggage.
  • A private car makes it one leg with one driver, which on this route is worth considerably more than it is on a short hop.

Timing it properly

  • Leave early. Arriving in San Juan del Sur after dark makes the last stretch to a hillside or beach property harder than it needs to be.
  • If you would rather not do it in one push, breaking the trip in Granada or Managua turns a hard day into two easy halves.
  • Tell us where you are going in San Juan del Sur when you book. Town, hillside and the outer beaches are three quite different final twenty minutes.
