Matagalpa is the heart of Nicaraguan coffee country, up in the cool northern highlands. San Juan del Sur is hot, flat and on the Pacific. Between them is most of the country, and the contrast at the other end is the point.

What the journey involves

  • It is a long day. You come down out of the highlands, pass Managua, then run south through Rivas to the coast.
  • Public transport means changing at Managua and again at Rivas, with a city terminal crossing in the middle carrying everything you own.
  • The mountain section at the start is slower than the map suggests. It is a good road but it is not a straight one.
  • A private car is one leg, door to door, which on a route this long is the difference between arriving tired and arriving finished.

Worth knowing at the other end

  • Pack for the change. Matagalpa mornings are genuinely cool and San Juan del Sur is not, and people routinely arrive dressed for the wrong climate.
  • If you are bringing coffee back from the fincas, tell us — it travels fine but it takes up more room than people expect.
  • Aim to arrive in daylight. The last stretch to the hillside or the outer beaches is much easier before dark.
  • Once you are here, the same number handles food, groceries and rides out to the beaches.
