Getting to the surf beaches around San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur bay itself is not where people surf. The beaches are spread north and south along the coast, each one a drive on a road that ranges from fine to memorable.

Delivery from C$184 in town and C$276 to the outer beaches. Every fee is agreed before we set off.

The beaches and what the trip is like

  • Maderas is north and the most popular, which also makes it the busiest run. The road is rough in places and worse after rain.
  • Marsella is the quieter bay on the same road north, with houses and small places to stay rather than a strip of restaurants.
  • Remanso is south past the hill, closer to town than Maderas but with the same lack of anything walkable nearby.
  • For any of them, allow more time than the distance suggests. The distance is not what makes it slow.

Getting there and back

  • Shuttles run to the surf beaches on fixed timetables. Fine if your day matches, frustrating if the surf is good at the wrong hour.
  • A private ride goes when you want and, more importantly, comes back when you want.
  • Tell us if you have boards. It changes the vehicle, and it is much better sorted out when you book than when the driver arrives.

Eating and drinking out there

  • The beach kitchens close earlier than the town does. After a late session, that is often the problem.
  • We deliver to Maderas, Marsella and Remanso — food, cold drinks, ice, or a full grocery shop for a house.
  • Outer-beach delivery is C$276 with a C$250 minimum. Allow roughly 45 to 75 minutes; it is a long run on a bad road and we would rather quote it honestly.
  • If you are on the sand rather than at a house, agree a meeting point with us before the driver leaves town.
