Is San Juan del Sur safe?
For most visitors, yes. San Juan del Sur is a small beach town that lives on travellers, and the trouble people run into is mostly the ordinary kind: a bag lifted from the sand, a phone on show on a dark street, a ride home with a stranger at two in the morning. Knowing where those risks are is most of the protection.
Delivery from C$184 in town and C$276 to the outer beaches. Every fee is agreed before we set off.
Where the everyday risks are
- Unattended bags on the beach. Take only what the afternoon needs down to the sand, and keep it in sight while you swim.
- Walking home late on unlit roads. The centre is lively at night; the roads up to the hills and out to the beaches are dark and have no footpath.
- Empty beaches after dark. Stay for the sunset, then leave the quiet stretches of sand once the light has gone.
- Phones and cash on show. Carry what the night needs and leave the rest locked away where you are staying.
Getting around at night
- Arrange the ride home before you go out, especially if you are staying in the hills or at one of the beaches.
- Use a driver whose number you saved and whose price you agreed in writing, rather than whoever happens to pull up.
- Taxis have no meter. Agree the fare before the door closes, and it will not move afterwards.
- For Maderas, Marsella or Remanso after dark, take a car. The road is rough, unlit and a long walk.
The sea, the water and cash
- Surf beaches can have strong currents. Swim where other people are swimming and ask about conditions before you go in.
- Most visitors drink bottled or filtered water rather than tap water, and it is cheap and easy to get delivered.
- Use cash machines in daylight, and carry small notes: most drivers and small shops cannot change a large one late at night.
How Blink helps
- Every Blink driver is chosen personally by the owner, a foreigner here too, for how they drive and how they treat visitors.
- Drivers and WhatsApp in English or Spanish, with price, pickup and drop-off agreed in writing before you travel.
- Food, groceries, water and ice delivered late into the night, so a craving at midnight does not mean a walk on a dark road.
- Luggage is handed to reception against your name, never left at a gate.
